Why would this office call me? Please answer?

My husband and I put our info on a paper for our possible future landlord to do a background check on us. We have been trying to rent a house from him. The people from the establishment called and didnt say anything on the voicemail, just silence. I called back and they asked "Well what was on the voicemail?" I said "Nothing." They told me who they were (they r legit) and said they didnt know who they called. I said "okay , have a good day." The possible future landlord hasnt even called yet and he said he would call when he found about our background checks. Why did they call me?
