0 bytes used 0 bytes left of 780mb cd-r's?

when first got laptop (fujitsu siemens) burning stuff to disc was fine but since reinstalling OS i cannot burn things its properties say 0bytes used 0bytes free, i know its not the discs unless every single disc ive used is duff (unlikely) and ive checked that the drivers are up ton date and working, anyone got any ideas???
